Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ’s
What is online therapy?
Online therapy is an alternative to meeting face to face, except that we are in a virtual therapy room. It is ‘live’ therapy, using a secure video-conferencing platform called Zoom. You will see my face and I will see yours. You can access from your home, office or anywhere that you feel comfortable.
Will my sessions be secure and confidential?
Yes, I use a secure video platform called Zoom and I always conduct sessions from a private therapy room to protect your confidentiality. I recommend that you find a private space too, where you won’t be interrupted.
What equipment will I need?
You will need either a laptop, a mobile-phone or computer that has a video-camera, a microphone and speakers (most have them built in).
What are the potential drawbacks?
Technical issues are still the biggest drawback to online therapy. It happens rarely, but with two internet connections to rely on, it does happen. Communication is slightly different, for example there isn’t as much ‘body’ awareness. I may not see what you are doing with your hands, or if your body is tense. The focus is more on facial expressions and the words that you share.
Does it work as well as in-person therapy?
Yes! Recent studies have shown that online therapy can be just as effective. In some cases the sense of ‘anonymity’ can make it easier to be open. It means that you can choose a therapist that you really connect with, rather that whoever happens to be close by. For clients who might struggle to attend therapy in person, online therapy can be an attractive option. It takes away the need to commute to a specific place, find parking and get settled in unfamiliar surroundings. It can save a lot of time and you have more energy to put into your therapy session.
